MTN South Africa says Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, will be available from 23 October 2026, with pre-orders “coming soon” after the 9 September unveil.
MTN South Africa has confirmed that Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, will be available in South Africa from 23 October 2026. Pre-orders are “coming soon,” the operator said after Apple unveiled the device at its 9 September event.
The date matters because it turns a global keynote product into a local retail calendar item. MTN also said it will sell the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, with Duo availability beginning later in October.
Apple’s global unveil on 9 September set the product story. MTN’s 21 September local note set the retail date. Other carriers may follow; none of that is confirmed in the MTN statement alone.
“MTN South Africa will be offering Apple’s latest products, including iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max,” the operator said, according to MyBroadband. “Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are coming soon, with availability beginning 23 October.”
That is a carrier availability window, not a full price list. Contract pricing published alongside the Pro models — from about R1,299 a month for iPhone 18 Pro on Yellow Plans Deluxe over 36 months — does not yet pin Duo monthly numbers.
Apple positioned the Duo as a passport-sized foldable with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR panel, an A20 Pro chip, storage from 256GB to 2TB, and a dual-battery design. Marketing claims include all-day battery life and the thinnest open iPhone profile yet.
Those specs will be tested in South African heat, pocket dust and network conditions like every other flagship. The foldable crease, hinge durability and repair cost are the practical questions retailers will face after 23 October.
Foldable screens and hinges are where South African aftersales get expensive. Until MTN and Apple publish local repair turnaround and insurance add-ons, Duo buyers are taking a service-risk bet as much as a hardware bet.
Enterprise and high-ARPU consumer segments will watch those terms closely. A 23 October shelf date without clear repair SLAs will slow the first wave more than the keynote specs will.
Duo pricing in rand, stock depth beyond MTN, and whether other carriers match the 23 October window remain unpublished in the confirmation coverage. Pre-order mechanics — deposit, configuration locks, delivery SLA — will decide whether “available from 23 October” means day-one stock or a soft launch.
The verified local fact is the one on MTN’s calendar: Apple’s foldable is lined up for South Africa from 23 October 2026, with pre-orders still to open.
